Janmashtami Celebrations in Dwarka

Dwarka, the city of Gold, is the abode of Lord Krishna and this is the place where he settled for around five thousand years before leaving Mathura. Janmashtami celebrations in Dwarka are enjoyed with great zest and vigor. Since, Shri Krishna was part of the city for long, people still remember those days of His existence and hence, commemorate his birthday every year with pomp and gaiety.

Dwarka means ‘door to salvation’. It was in the state of Gujarat. In fact, Lord Krishna and his brother Balrama established the city. Legends have it that after the death of the Lord, the city got submerged in the sea.

The Dwarkadheesh temple in Dwarka is very popular for its huge and grand Janmashtami celebration. Devotees from all the country visit the place during the month of Shravana to celebrate the anniversary of Lord Krishna. The Aboti Brahmins of the city is known to perform the daily routine of the Janmashtami pooja. It is known as ‘nitya kram’ of the Lord.

The day of the Janmashtami celebration in Dwarka breaks with ‘mangla aarti’ performed in almost all the temples of the city. Then the brushing and cleaning of the Dwarkadheesh is done. And the darshans are allowed to devotees. The God is also offered ‘Banta Bhog’ or milk and milk products. Then Lord is given holy bath. After this, the Lord is adorned with clothes and ornaments. And for a little while in the evening, the Lord is allowed to sleep.

The actual Janmashtami celebration in Dwarka begins at around 11 pm. At this time, He is decked up with precious stones and diamonds. He is offered ‘utsav bhog’ to eat. And then devotees are allowed to make their offerings. At exact 12, aarti is performed and sung. The idol of the Lord is rocked in the bejeweled cradle. Even devotees are allowed one-by-one to rock the cradle and get blessed. Puja is completed after two hours and is rounded up with ‘mahabhog’ offered to the Lord.
